Joanna Rummens

Biography:

Dr. JOANNA (ANNEKE) RUMMENS is Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and Interim Chair for its new Health Sciences Research Ethics Board. 

An internationally recognized expert in identity|diversity issues, migrant health|wellbeing, and knowledge transfer governance, Dr. Rummens’ career spans the social sciences and medicine/health sciences, links health, im|migration and education sectors, and bridges academe, community, and government. Her work integrates scientific and scholarly research, with knowledge transfer | exchange | mobilization | uptake initiatives, to directly inform policy, programming and practice. 

A multilingual anthropologist/sociologist by training, Dr. Rummens’ scholarly research is transdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, comparative and mixed-methodological, and has involved collaborative partnerships networks across Canada, Europe, Africa, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. She has held academic appointments in the Humanities, Arts, Medicine, and Community Services at four different universities as well as simultaneous appointments as health systems research scientist at leading hospitals.

Dr. Rummens founded | led three major integrated research & knowledge exchange centers| institutes that brought together academics, communities, service providers and key decision makers to address pressing societal needs in the areas of child youth success, migration and social inclusion, and global development, respectively. Throughout her career she has served in various advisory capacities to diverse initiatives, organizations and government ministries at the local, provincial, national and international level.
